Modeling the evolution of resistance in cotton bollworm to concurrently planted Bt cotton and Bt maize in China

چکیده

Transgenic maize expressing toxins derived from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) may be commercially planted in northern China where Bt cotton has been for more than two decades. While brings additional benefits insect control, it complicates resistance management of bollworm (CBW), Helicoverpa armigera (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae), a common target and maize. Here we developed two-locus population genetic models to assess risk CBW which four cases types refuges are considered. Model simulations showed that time (TTR) is longest case two-toxin & maize, followed by one-toxin With 25% seed mixed refuge 20% refuge, TTRs order 54, 13, 9, 7 generations, respectively. natural refuges, differences among greater. Sensitivity analysis parameters examined, initial frequency alleles fitness cost ones most least sensitive, We concluded when scarce, planting both instead necessary combat concurrently China.

Dominant resistance to Bt cotton and minor cross-resistance to Bt toxin Cry2Ab in cotton bollworm from China

Evolution of resistance by insect pests threatens the long-term benefits of transgenic crops that produce insecticidal proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). Previous work has detected increases in the frequency of resistance to Bt toxin Cry1Ac in populations of cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera, from northern China where Bt cotton producing Cry1Ac has been grown extensively for more th...

The Halo Effect: Suppression of Pink Bollworm on Non-Bt Cotton by Bt Cotton in China

In some previously reported cases, transgenic crops producing insecticidal proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) have suppressed insect pests not only in fields planted with such crops, but also regionally on host plants that do not produce Bt toxins. Here we used 16 years of field data to determine if Bt cotton caused this "halo effect" against pink bollworm (Pectinophora gossypiella) in s...

Hybridizing transgenic Bt cotton with non-Bt cotton counters resistance in pink bollworm.

Extensive cultivation of crops genetically engineered to produce insecticidal proteins from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) has suppressed some major pests, reduced insecticide sprays, enhanced pest control by natural enemies, and increased grower profits. However, these benefits are being eroded by evolution of resistance in pests. We report a strategy for combating resistance by cro...

Early Warning of Cotton Bollworm Resistance Associated with Intensive Planting of Bt Cotton in China

Transgenic crops producing Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) toxins kill some key insect pests, but evolution of resistance by pests can reduce their efficacy. The predominant strategy for delaying pest resistance to Bt crops requires refuges of non-Bt host plants to promote survival of susceptible pests. To delay pest resistance to transgenic cotton producing Bt toxin Cry1Ac, farmers in the United S...

Suppression of cotton bollworm in multiple crops in China in areas with Bt toxin-containing cotton.

Transgenic cotton that has been engineered to produce insecticidal toxins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) and so to resist the pest cotton bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera) has been widely planted in Asia. Analysis of the population dynamics of H. armigera from 1992 to 2007 in China indicated that a marked decrease in regional outbreaks of this pest in multiple crops was associated with the plan...
